Royal Red Cross Decoration, 2nd Class, awarded to Isabella Frame Lang

ISABELLA FRAME LANG was born at Montgomery Street, Larkhall, on 25th March, 1887.

 

Her parents were Alexander Lang, a Watchmaker, and Marion Finlayson, who were married at 'Mayfield', Muir Street, Larkhall, on 6th December, 1881.
Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Lang, a Batman, and Isabella Frame.
Her maternal grandparents were John Finlayson, a Coal Miner, and Mary Wilson.

 

The 1891 LARKHALL Census was taken on 5th April, 1891.
The family are listed at 18 Montgomery Street, Larkhall, as follows:
Alexander Lang, age 42, Head, Watchmaker, b Hamilton.
Marion Lang, age 32, Wife, b Larkhall.
Alexander Lang, age 12, Son, Scholar, b Larkhall.
John Lang, age 8, Son, Scholar, b Larkhall.
Mary Lang, age 6, Daughter, Scholar, b Larkhall.
ISABELLA LANG, age 4, Daughter, b Larkhall.

 

The 1901 LARKHALL Census was taken on 31st March, 1901.
The family are listed at 'Mayfield', Muir Street, Larkhall, as follows:
Alexander Lang, age 52, Head, Watchmaker, b Hamilton.
Marion Lang, age 42, Wife, b Larkhall.
Alexander Lang, age 22, Son, Watchmaker, b Larkhall.
John F. Lang, age 18, Son, Pupil Teacher, b Larkhall.
Mary W. Lang, age 16, Daughter, Pupil Teacher, b Larkhall.
ISABELLA F. LANG, age 14, Daughter, Scholar, b Larkhall.
Marion Lang, age 9, Daughter, Scholar, b Larkhall.

 

On 7th August, 1904, her father Alexander Lang, age 55, died at 'Mayfield', Muir Street, Larkhall.

 

The 1911 GLASGOW, HILLHEAD, Census was taken on 2nd April, 1911.
BELLA LANG, age 24, Hospital Nurse, b Larkhall, is listed in the census for The Western Infirmary, Glasgow.

 

The London Gazette, Number 30723, pages 6533 and 6534, published on 3rd June, 1918, reads as follows:
"Admiralty, 3rd June, 1918

The King has been graciously pleased to award the Royal Red Cross Decoration to the undermentioned ladies in recognition of their valuable services in connection with the war:-

Royal Red Cross, 2nd Class
<snip>
Miss Isabella Frame Lang, Theatre Sister, R.N. Hospital, Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute."

 

A newspaper clipping taken from The Hamilton Advertiser, page 5, dated 8th June, 1918, reads:
"HONOUR TO A LOCAL NURSE - The many friends of Miss Isabella F. Lang, theatre nurse, R.N., will be pleased to learn that she has been awarded the Royal Red Cross Decoration (Second Class) under the King's Birthday Honours. Nurse Lang was trained in the Motherwell Fever Hospital, afterwards serving for some years in the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, under Sir Wm. McEwan. A short time was also spent in Park Home, and for the past two years she has been theatre nurse in the Royal Naval Hospital, Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute. Nurse Lang is a daughter of Mrs Lang, Mayfield, Muir Street, and of the late Mr Alexander Lang, watchmaker, Cross, Larkhall."

 

ISABELLA FRAME LANG, of 'Mayfield', Larkhall, Lanarkshire, applied to the General Nursing Council of Scotland for registration on 21st February, 1922.
On her application form she listed her nursing experience as follows:
From May, 1907, to May, 1910 - County Hospital, Motherwell.
From Sep, 1910, to Sep, 1914 - Western Infirmary, Glasgow.
From Nov, 1914, to Jun, 1915 - Park Nursing Home, Glasgow.
From Nov, 1915, to Apr, 1916 - County Hospital, Motherwell.
From Apr, 1916, to Oct, 1918 - Royal Naval Hospital, Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute.
The Certificate of Registration, Number A 987, was issued on 21st April, 1922.

 

In the UK and Ireland Nursing Register, ISABELLA FRAME LANG, of 'Mayfield', 53 Muir Street, Larkhall, Lanarkshire, is registered on 21st April, 1922, with experience at Western Infirmary, Glasgow, "E.N. -/10/13".

 

On 30th November, 1943, her mother Marion Lang, age 85, died at 'Mayfield', Muir Street, Larkhall.

ISABELLA FRAME LANG, Retired Matron, age 91, died on 9th December, 1978, at St Mary's Hospital, Lanark. The death record shows that her 'Usual Residence' was 53 Muir Street, Larkhall. The cause of death was Broncho-Pneumonia, Generalised Arterio Sclerosis, and Parkinson's Disease.
